The Ultimate Algarve Campervan Itinerary
(6 Nights of Coastal Magic in Portugal)

There’s a moment on a road trip when time softens.
You stop checking the clock. You pull over for views you didn’t plan. Dinner turns into a memory instead of a reservation.
That’s exactly what happened when we explored Portugal’s Algarve by campervan… and it ended up being one of the most unforgettable parts of our entire Europe trip.
If you’re dreaming of van life in Portugal, here’s our exact 6-night route, where we stayed, what we did, and the spots that completely stole the show.

⸻
🚐 Why Do the Algarve by Campervan?

You get to fully experience the country this way, the culture, the food, the people, in the most authentic way.
* Waking up steps from the ocean
* Having total freedom to change plans
* Finding hidden beaches you’d never reach otherwise
And honestly? Some of our favorite moments weren’t planned at all.

🗺️ Our 6-Night Algarve Campervan Route

Our itinerary took us from the southern east point of Portugal: Faro and then we made our way up to north via the west coast and central Portugal until we reach Porto.
Route Highlights:
Fuseta → Albufeira → Lagos → Salema → Sagres → Bordeira → Sines → Cascáis → Ericeira → Nazaré → Praia da Barra → Porto

Night by Night Itinerary
🌅 Night 1: Fuseta Beach (Free Parking Spot)
Our first night set the tone perfectly.

We parked right at Fuseta Beach, and within minutes, we were walking along calm, glassy water as the sun dipped below the horizon.

No campsite. No check-in. Just us, the ocean, and that “we really did this” feeling.
🌊 Nights 2–3: Algarve Motorhome Park Falesia

This was our home base for a couple of nights—according to Forbes this beach was ranked the most beautiful beach in the world! The entrance to the beach is just a short walk from the campervan park and has direct access!

What we did nearby:
🍗 Casa do Franco (Albufeira)

We made a point to stop here for piri piri chicken, and it absolutely lived up to the hype.
→ If you eat one traditional meal in Portugal, make it this.
🥾 Cliffside hike in Albufeira

We walked along the ridge line above the beach, and it felt like something out of a movie—endless golden cliffs and ocean views in every direction.
🏖️ Lagos (exploring)

A must-stop town. Lively, scenic, and full of charm.
🌊 Salema Beach

Quieter, more local, and the water here was insanely clear.
🌍 Sagres — “End of the World”

Standing at the edge of Sagres truly feels like you’ve reached the end of Europe. Windy, dramatic, and unforgettable.

🌅 Night 4: Bordeira (Cliffside Wild Camping)

This was hands down our favorite place we stayed.
We found a cliffside spot in Bordeira and parked just in time for sunset. No crowds. No noise. Just dramatic cliffs and crashing waves below.
It felt raw and untouched in the best way.
🍽️ Dinner: Restaurante do Cabrita

We tried cuttlefish here, and it ended up being one of the most memorable meals of the trip. Simple, local, and so good.
🚗 Night 5: Cascáis (via Sines)

This day felt like a transition from wild coastlines to a more refined, coastal town vibe.
📍 Stop in Sines

A quiet, underrated coastal town that’s perfect for breaking up the drive.
🍽️ Dinner: Grelhas
Definitely more of a splurge—but so worth it. One of those meals you’re still thinking about days later.

We ended the night in Cascáis, just outside Lisbon, with a totally different energy from the Algarve.

🌊 Night 6: Praia da Barra (Final Campervan Night)
Our last night felt like a slow goodbye to van life.
🍽️ Stop in Ericeira (lunch)

A laid-back surf town with great food and ocean views.
🌊 Nazaré

Home to the largest waves in the world, and seeing it in person is surreal. The cliffs, the scale, the energy—it’s unlike anywhere else.
We parked at Praia da Barra for the night, soaking in one last ocean sunset before heading to Porto the next day to return the van.

Things to Know Before You Go
💤 Where to Park & Camp in the Algarve
A mix of freedom and strategy:
* Free parking (Fuseta, Bordeira, Praia da Barra)
* Campervan parks (Falesia for amenities)
* Apps like Park4Night are essential
💡 Pro tip: Arrive before sunset to secure the best spots—especially along cliffs.
⸻
🍽️ Must-Try Food Stops
* Casa do Franco → Piri piri chicken (non-negotiable)
* Restaurante do Cabrita → Cuttlefish dinner
* Grelhas (Sines) → Elevated, memorable meal
Portugal quietly became one of our favorite food countries on this trip.
⸻
⚠️ Things to Know Before You Go
* Cliffside roads can be narrow and windy
* West coast = much windier (bring layers!)
* Not all beaches are easy to access (stairs = built-in workout)
* Wild camping rules can vary—always double check!
⸻
🤍 Final Thoughts
Van life in the Algarve isn’t about checking boxes.

It’s about slowing down. Letting the road lead. Saying yes to the random stop, the extra sunset, the dinner you didn’t plan.
Out of our entire Europe itinerary, this stretch felt the most free.
And if you’re even slightly considering doing Portugal by campervan… take this as your sign.
